WHY IS FERTILIZER IMPORTANT?

Plants require minerals and elements such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, manganese, zinc, copper, and boron to grow, develop, and bear fruit. Over repeated farming cycles, soil becomes depleted of these vital nutrients.

Fertilizers are materials used to replenish depleted nutrients, improve soil fertility, and support plant growth. Accurate and timely fertilizer use elevates crop yield and quality.

SOIL ANALYSIS AND ITS IMPORTANCE

The ultimate goal of agriculture is the highest possible yield and best quality harvest. This can only be achieved through BALANCED and SCHEDULED fertilization, which requires accurate SOIL TESTING.

Hazards of Fertilizing Without Soil Analysis:

  • Under-fertilization leading to nutrient deficiency and poor plant development.
  • Over-fertilization causing soil salinization and financial loss.
  • Using the wrong fertilizer type leading to yield reduction.
  • Applying fertilizers at the wrong timing and using incorrect methods.

WHERE NOT TO TAKE SOIL SAMPLES FROM?

To ensure the soil sample accurately represents the field, avoid taking samples from the following areas:

Threshing floors or livestock resting areas
Locations where manure was previously piled
Spots where straw or weeds were burnt
Excessively elevated or waterlogged field depressions
Roadsides, ditches, and irrigation canal borders
Building perimeters and direct tree trunks

SAMPLING TIMING AND DEPTH

Soil samples should be collected 1-2 months before sowing/planting or fertilization. A depth of 0–20 cm is sufficient for field crops, whereas orchards and vineyards require composite samples from 0–20, 20–40, and 40–60 cm depths.
